Health Rules to Live By

Does skinny equate to healthy, or is there more to it than that?

We are inundated with conflicting commands for thin bodies and healthy lifestyles, but there is a lot more to being healthy than just your jean size!  I don’t know about you, but I think it is high time we start valuing health for what it really is: a complex web of physical, mental and emotional well-being!

There are ‘experts’ everywhere you look, pushing diets and exercise equipment.  Take a moment to reflect on your lifestyle, and your own health goals.  Be honest with yourself, and set achievable goals for where you are in life right now.  Take a look at some of my “rules to live by,” which help me to be healthy and happy.  Can you come up with some of your own?

Take pleasure in food.
Healthy or unhealthy, enjoy the act of cooking and eating.  When you focus on the pleasure of eating you are more likely to feel satisfied from a moderate amount

Eating out: reflect on what really sounds good.
Break habits: try something new! Is the burger still making your mouth water, or does the salad actually sound better? Sometimes your body will crave something other than the ‘ol standby, so pay attention!

Sweet tooth? Munch on frozen fruit!
I have been in to mangoes from Trader Joe’s lately.  When I’m feeling lazy after dinner sometimes I just suck on them frozen, but they are also great in smoothies and DYI frozen yogurt.

Balance exercise, sleep and fun.
Try to make exercise a regular part of your week, but listen when your body says you need more sleep, or when you mind says you need more fun!

Relish in daily routines!
I like to sit down with an afternoon cup of tea whenever possible.  This leaves me feeling calm, warm and satisfied, and keeps me from grazing in the kitchen!

SPREAD THE HEALTH: What is means to be healthy is different for everyone; Set achievable, realistic goals for yourself based on your lifestyle in order to feel your best physically and emotionally.

A health goal I’ve set for myself is to stop eating red meat and focus on eating more vegetables. My mom has been trying to help me with this for years, so hopefully I can get to it! 🙂
