Stress Less with a Clean Room

Give yourself room to breathe, and do it frequently.

While in college, I’ve gotten in the habit of taking Fridays off from homework completely. If I’m feeling particularly motivated to work on Friday, rather than start homework, I’ll clean up my room and try to get done other errands or apartment chores that are not directly school-related. My stress always goes down on Fridays because I have already made up my mind that I don’t have to think about school until Saturday.

My Friday afternoon routine usually includes a quick 10-15 minute tidy-up. I’ve grown to crave this weekend activity for a few reasons:

  1. I’m putting off my homework but can still feel good about it (after all, I’m still being productive!)
  2. Sweeping the floor after picking up is satisfying and stress-reducing in itself
  3. My clean room, paired with good lighting and a cup of tea (hot or cold), really helps me focus on schoolwork on Saturday

Find a small way to let yourself breathe every week. For me, letting myself say no to school for a day really does the trick, and having a clean room when I get to business keep the stress down through the weekend.
