According to the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, college students need both aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercise each week to maintain mental, physical, and emotional health.
Little time to exercise? Shoot for the minimum fitness recommendation for young adults: 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week (or 30 minutes a day) and 1 muscle-strengthening exercise twice per week. Sound like too much already? Break your fitness goal down into manageable chunks throughout the week, like a 20 minute power-walk to class. Don’t over-think it, just get moving!
So what is aerobic exercise and muscle-strengthening activity, exactly?
Aerobic exercise (aka cardio) involves the increased use of oxygen during exercise. In other words, if you go out for a run your breathing will get harder and your heart rate will increase. Types of moderate-intensity aerobic activity include:

Join one of BU’s many club sports!
Muscle-strengthening activities should work all of the major muscle groups in your body (i.e. legs, back, chest, shoulders, and arms). Try to complete at least 1-3 sets of these types of activities each week. A set consists of 8-12 repetitions of that activity. Examples of muscle-strengthening activities are:

Find an exercise routine that works for you and consider teaming up with others to stay motivated. Set up weekly gym dates with a roommate or literally schedule your workout time by signing up for a PDP class at FitRec. If you’re a full-time student at BU, there are hundreds of ways you can stay active through your free membership at the Fitness & Recreation Center (aka FitRec) on-campus – so you better get going!
